From Travel Sketches to Finished Art: Artist Talk in Glasgow | Fiona Wilson
I’m really looking forward to giving a talk next week on Monday 1st December about my travel sketchbooks and how they feed into my artwork. I’ll be speaking at the Glasgow Society of Women Artists‘ Afternoon Talk series at Kelvinside Hillhead church hall on Observatory Road, Glasgow, with doors opening at 1pm and my talk starting at 1.15pm.
As a professional artist, I work with a variety of materials and techniques to produce richly textured, multi-layered monotype prints, drawings and paintings. Much of my inspiration comes from collected stories during my travels to far away places, where I try to capture the essence of different cultures and perspectives, translating them into vibrant, expressive imagery through print and paint. Having lived most of my life in the often grey West of Scotland, I’ve embraced bold colour as a counterbalance to our climate! Recently, I’ve been developing a new series of landscape paintings and prints using sketches made while on campervan trips in the North West of Scotland.
I’ll be bringing along an array of sketchbooks from my vast collection, including travel sketch journals that document my adventures to exotic places through drawings, collage and words. I’ll also be sharing my studio journals, which should give you a rare insight into how I use sketchbooks to work through my many ideas before creating final artworks. I’m planning to have enough time to develop a sketch idea into a larger drawing, so you can see my experimental and intuitive way of working in action.
I promise to bring plenty of sketchbooks for you to browse through during the coffee break too, so you can have a close-up look at the rich detail on the pages. Hopefully you’ll take away some tips and inspiration to try travel sketching yourself!

Tickets are £5 for non-members and £4 for GSWA members, payable at the door. Tea and coffee will be served after the talk. Everyone is welcome, so please feel free to bring friends who might be interested!
